About Us
Central Melbourne Psychology is a leader in the field of specialised forensic assessment and treatment. Under the leadership of Patrick Newton, our team of psychologists and counsellors combine a wealth of experience to provide client-centred services that balance the complex needs of clients with the strict requirements of the justice system and professional bodies. We strive to provide objectivity and empathy, taking into account each client's history, personality and mental health. We accept referrals from lawyers, health professionals and correctional services, and direct referrals from the general public.
Our Services
Forensic Asssessment
Having assessed some of the country's most serious offenders, Central Melbourne Psychology has earned a reputation for providing careful and comprehensive forensic assessments. By utilising state-of-the-art assessment tools, we provide courts with professional clinical opinion and assessment of risk, grounded in empirical research. Our approach to the assessment takes into account the individual’s personal history, psychosocial development, personality, coping skills, relationships, drug and alcohol use, mental health, mental status, and any factors relevant to the offending behaviour, current situation and rehabilitative potential.
Offence-specific Treatment
Central Melbourne Psychology specialises in treatment which targets the criminogenic factors relevant to specific criminal offences. We provide treatment for a broad range of criminal offending, including sex-related offences, drug and alcohol-related offences, violent offences, driving and traffic-related offences, theft and fraud, and professional misconduct.
We use a variety of therapeutic techniques to assist the client to develop insight, improve coping and social skills, enhance empathy, modify behaviour, regulate emotions, prevent relapse and ultimately reduce the risk of recidivism.
Central Melbourne Psychology provides pre- and post-sentencing treatment, and works collaboratively with Corrections Victoria and other professionals. We regularly provide treatment reports for Courts and other government and professional bodies.
The Sex Offender Treatment Program (SOTP) at Central Melbourne Psychology offers empirically-supported psychological treatment which is specifically adapted to address the individual needs of persons who have been charged with committing a sexual offence.
Due to high demand, the waiting list for SOTP is currently closed.
Court Attendance and Expert Witness
All our psychologists are experienced expert witnesses and are available to attend Court to give evidence in relation to their reports and to support the Courts in their decision making. Our opinions have been quoted in leading cases and have been relied upon in a wide variety of areas including mental health, sex-offending, risk assessment of offenders, the impacts of imprisonment, and strategies to contain the prospect of recidivism. We have extensive experience in giving evidence at all levels of the judicial system and welcome the opportunity to engage with cross-examination as a means of ensuring that our opinions are robust, helpful and objective.
